TOP CHESSES

THE NAMING OF THE 'CHEESE GANG'
The story of how I got my name.

Yvette at  ©Turtle Gardens Animal Rescue Society decided the Carlie litter should be named after cheese. (Carlie gave birth to me and my siblings).

So, she wrote a posting on the TG blog asking everyone to put on their thinking caps and come up with some good 'cheese' names.

Everyone got real busy digging out their caps, putting them on and pulling them down good and tight and the list they came up with was real tasty and some were downright stinking delightful.

They came up with;
Velveeta
Stilton
Brie
Swiss
Blue
Camembert (Cami)
Ricotta (Ricky)
Emmental (Emmy)
Leyden
Jubilee Blue
Khoa
Sirene
Aura
Skyr
Cheddar
Gouda
Feta
Mozz
Philly
Parm
Colby-Jack
Tex-Mex
Bartlett Blue

I LIKE LITTLE GIRLS

It's the weekend!!!!

I love weekends 'cause my dad doesn't go to the office. We had a short snuggle in bed and then we ALL got up.
I say ALL because, dad gets up extra early to take me for a walk so mom can sleep longer, EVERY morning.  Mom takes me for my walks late at night and in the middle of the night if I rustle around a lot, make loud huffy sounds or whine.

Once we were up, everyone got ready to go to the beach. The sky is grey and cloudy, and it's raining on and off,  but we don't care. My mom says we are 'west coast ducks'.

Jackpot! There were lots of puppies and old dogs, at the beach today! There were also lots of children.  But I was brave and I made friends with a 10 year old girl. I'm one lucky guy.... she understands dogs and spent almost an hour throwing sticks into the water for me!

I'm a little bit afraid and unsure of kids. I usually hide behind my mom and tinkle a bit. But today I was bolder and let everyone pat me and talk to me and I wasn't scared... not even a little bit!

Hooray for being a 'west coast duck'.

Food Stamps for Pets

This is a grrrrrrreat idea...food stamps for pets. While researching financial aid options for a relatives sick dog, I stumbled across a  new donation-based program called Pet Food Stamps. This program provides food stamps for pets of low-income families who, because of current circumstances, are struggling ot unable to feed their pets. Over 45,000 pets signed up in the first 2 weeks of operation.  This is a privately funded, not a government, program. Unfortunately the program is only available to anyone in the USA.

Only in the USA?  So I started digging.. and you know how much I love to dig!
I unearthed a website named Pets of the Homeless http://www.petsofthehomeless.org/
This organization provides veterinary care an pet food to the homeless in both Canada and the USA.
This organization only has 4 collection sites in Canada, all in Ontario.

SICK DOG NEEDS HELP

Can you help Daisy before her time runs out?

Daisy lives in Edmonton. She is very ill. The lymph glands in her neck are swollen, she won't eat, is very thirsty and drinks, but vomits it right back up.

She is becoming weaker and thinner day, by day.

Daisy is the joy of her family's lives.. Her family consists of a single mom  and  her adult son. The mom lost her job almost a year ago. She   is responsible for and cares for her adult son who was born with spina bifida and struggles with severe and debilitating depression.

They live a very simple and meager life. They use public transportation,  have rented out the extra room in their home and do without anything but the basics. With barely enough to live on,  they have somehow managed to create a happy home life..

When you  walk into their house the first thing you notice is the love. It envelopes you like a warm breeze. Daisy greets everyone with a wagging tail and climbs up on the sofas to snuggle and be a part everything that happens. Her presence in this family is enormous.

The groups and associations, including the rescue organisations, we have contacted in Alberta cannot help unless Daisy is surrendered. This family has no extra money to take Daisy to the vet, even on a payment plan. The vet clinics I've contacted won't see her, even for a consultation, with out charging them.

I can't imagine the distress it would cause Daisy to be given up when she is already distress by her illness.
Nor can I imagine how heartbreaking and stressful it would be for her owners, especially for the young man who's had Daisy faithfully at his side, through his own illness.

I cant afford to take on Daisy's veterinary care alone, maybe as a community of pet owners we can come together and assist Daisy in getting the care she so desperately needs.

Please, if anyone  has any ideas or solutions, send Barbara or Roy or myself an email.

Thank you!

Golf Day

My parents are playing golf tomorrow. I'm going to a staff meating (I'm hoping that means everyone gets to eat a bi thick steak!), then I'll watch Emily teach a class (I'm hoping I can learn something and impress her), the out to Emily's acreage!

I'm so exited about going to see Emily and going to her acreage! That's where all dogs run free!
It's my first home in the Pacific, before my furever home.

By the way, the Pacific Ocean is not an ocean of milk....it's just water, delicious, salty water!

BOGEY THE BEACHBUM

I'm at the beach!

Pebbles and sand shift beneath my paws as I run and jump and play. The smell of salt and seaweed assaults my senses and arouses my curiosity.

I run with timid excitement along the tide line as the icy ocean licks at my legs and tickles my tummy. The lapping waves hiss quietly as they recede.

My dad throws sticks into the water, ripples appear and temptation overcomes my wariness.

I rush headlong into the sea, the briny cold bites at me like thousands of little shark teeth. I grab my tasty prize and excitedly rush for shore. My hind legs pushing off a forces that causes me to leap out and bound ahead in and out of the water, towards my dad.

A game!  A whoosh and sploosh, another stick goes flying out, over and into the water.

PLAYING FETCH IN THE OCEAN
I watch it bob up and down as I run out towards it. Suddenly the sand beneath me falls away and I splash wildly.

I turn and head back for shore, looking over my shoulder longingly at the driftwood dancing just out of my reach.

I really want to swim out as a big dog would. But, I'm just a baby, with big dog aspirations.

I wasn't afraid. Well .maybe just a little bit.
I LOVE DRIFTWOOD

As I reach the shore my eyes scan the beach and I realize this playground is littered with endless tasty, smelly treasure, large and small.

Hot diggity dog!  There's no need to fetch those delightful tidbits of driftwood from the icy water. I gather the choicest bits large and small on the beach and gnaw away till my hearts content.

Island Beach Adventure

We spent the past two days at the beach.

I taught my dad how to throw a stick, He learns quickly!

I splashed in the water and ran on the beach, dug holes in the sand and had a dog gone great time.

I'm not sure about swimming... I'm kinda scared when my 'willy' gets wet and cold... but only a little bit!
Maybe if dad goes in and gets his wet, I'll know its ok then I won't be afraid to go a bit deeper. :)

I met a dog named Cooper. He's tiny and cute. I know he's NOT afraid 'cause he was soaking wet and not shivering at all. He's a brave little guy. Maybe one day I'll be as brave as him.

Fetching sticks again, and again, and again, is kinda tiring, so afterwards we all had a big nap.

Justin Bieber's on TV

Justine Bieber is on TV. I don't understand what the big deal is. I have better hair, brighter eyes and I have bigger muscles than he does! I even have better moves.

I know I sing better and louder, just ask my dad. I sang to him for two hours, while mom was out. And, no, I do not have separation anxiety! Well, maybe jut a little bit.

Bones

I have a plan.... If I lay in the middle of the kitchen floor when my mom's cooking, I'll be in the way and if I give her sad eyes, she'll give me a lovely pork bone to eat and play with on the deck.

Sit, Stay, Shake a Paw

I learned to sit on command, stay on command and shake-a-paw on command. I just love it when they praise me and make a fuss over me. Sometimes I like it so much I turn into a mush ball when they pat me.  It makes me feel soooooo good!

Who knew that doing normal stuff would reap such yummy rewards! Who's teaching who, now?

Note to self ... Investigate sitting on a dining room chair. May lead to being rewarded with a plate of that human stuff. (NO hot dogs, please.. I am not a cannibal.)

PUPPY LOVE

Monday

I went to daycare. party... party! I came home all slobbery. Mom and dad said 'pee-hew'.
I don't smell like pee, I smell like puppy love.
That's 'cause all the doggies each other big wet kisses all day long! I'm one lucky puppy!

I took mom and dad for a walk in the dark. There were shadows and little sounds in the bushes. I wasn't scared... well , maybe just a little bit.

I growled and barked and all the giant monsters ran deep into the bushes. They were scared... and not just a little bit, they were scared a lot 'casue I have a very big 'outside voice'!

I Poo'd on Daddy's Underpants

I wan't scared..
I only poo'd a little bit.
He took them off and left them on the floor, so I poo'd on them and then folded them over to hide it. I'm pretty smart for  such a young puppy!

Then we all went to work. (Well, my parents went to work and I went to daycare to party some more!)

When we came back home my mommy saw the underpants and picked them up to throw them in the hamper. When she threw them the poo went all over the floor. It was hard and rolled around like little balls. I wanted to play with them, but mommy chased me away and called daddy. Boy did they ever laugh! They think I'm so smart!

I heard them talking a after they quit laughing. They said it happened 12 hours ago, so they can't reprimand me. They said I wont understand. But I do understand and now I know how to make them laugh...Just wait until next time. I'm going to hide it even better. Wait till I tell all the dogs at daycare. They can all go home and play 'hide and seek' the poo with their parents.

Tonight, when I was playing, I got excited and tinkled on the rug. That didn't go so well for me 'cause I had just been out for a long walk and supper was ready. So, my dad took me out for another walk and my mom washed the rug and by the time we got back, supper was on the table. No body said anything else to me about it... but they are watching me and not in a real good way. I'm gonna be extra cute for the rest of the evening and snuggle lots so they forget about the little tinkle.

I ate a tiny piece of pork. I chewed it for a long long time. It's not as good and doesn't last as long as a pork bone. I know about those because of Emily.

Oh ya... i forgot to tell you... Penny's gone! She want to live in West Vancouver with her new family. I hope she doesn't forget me. I'll never forget her. She's so beeaauutiful!

All in all.. it's been an interesting day. Tomorrow I get to go back to daycare and party some more with my friends! Hot diggity dog!

ROUTINE

Emily has lots of dogs. When I stayed with her she took pictures too!
That magnificent black dog is Penny. Isn't she beautiful?
That's my buddy Jinks with the glorious piebald face and athletic body.
We have something called a routine. I'm not sure what that is, but daddy said we have to make sure not to break it. So it must be expensive or something.

We got up really early and mommy took me for a walk. When we came home we went back to bed and daddy brought us cereal and then we all snuggled. Not for very long, though, because of the routine.

I thought were were going somewhere far away, but we went to daycare! Yahoo! pArTy  TiMe! I made some new friends and we played  all morning, it was so much fun! I got absolutely drenched with slobber.

I felt like a celebrity. The doggy-sitters took pictures of me and made a video of me for my mommy and daddy and and they called it my first day of daycare. I think they forgot I was there last week. Maybe it's because last week |I didn't have a furever family.

Hot diggity dog! Things just keep getting better and better.

After supper, my parents gave me another bath 'cause I  was sticky and smelly from all the other dogs slobber. I love baths... its like a big wet slobber all over me! Right down to my skin!  Maybe I should get slobbery every time I go to daycare, then I could have a bath every day.

We went  for a walk in the dark and the fog was thick and cold. The grass was frozen and crunched under my feet. I thought maybe my mom might be spooked so I led the way back home and growled at the mailbox so it would not come any closer. I'm a good protector. I wasn't scared at all,, well, ya know.. maybe.. just... a .. little... tiny.. itty.. bit.  But one day I won't be!

BREAKFAST IN BED?

That's me!
Laying on mommy and daddy's bed.
I think I hear daddy in the kitchen...
I bet he's bringing me breakfast in bed!
I think I'm gonna like it here.
Today we just hung out and got to know each other. We went for lots of walks and I got a treat every time I pee'd in the grass. All I have to do is stand by the door and one of them jumps up and takes me for a walk.  Even if I don't' have to pee it's an easy way to get a treat!

I met a few of my neighbours. One is really huge with long hair between his toes, prickly whiskers and smelly breath. His mom wears big boots and green clothes that look like a bucket of paint fell on her. My mom said she is 'army'. Sounds funny to me, 'cause all humans have arms. Doesn't that make them all 'army'?

I saw shadows in the dark tonight and tried to climb up my moms legs. She picked me up and carried me to where the light was shining.

I'm a very brave dog. I'm not scared of the dark.  Well, maybe just a little bit. .
Mommy and daddy leave a little light on when they go to bed. I don't need it but it's kinda nice, because I can see my toys and make sure no robbers steal them in the dark.

FUREVER

I came  home today!  To my furever home, with my furever family!

We had treats and cuddles and walks and naps and played games... and then we did it all over again!

I had a bath. Wow! It was wonderful! I got lots of rubs and the water was so warm and there were bubbles! Everything smells nice, including me.  After the bath I got more rubs with a warm towel and then even more rubs with something called a brush.

I wasn't scared at all. Not even a little bit!

ADOPTION HOME - VISIT

This couch is big enough for
me and all my friends...
and maybe a human or two
Today was a great day. Emily and beautiful Penny and Jinx got up early and went to daycare to play games and party.

After lunch, Emily took me for a long walk in the sunshine. There was traffic and all sorts of new smells and lots and lots of people and bicycles and stuff, along the way. I wasn't scared at all! Well, maybe a little bit. But I didn't let on to Emily. She's so brave and knows about this stuff.

At the end of our journey we went to a huge building and the new mom and dad were there! I kinda liked them. They're gentle and nice and have a soft sofa for me to sleep on, and toys, and treats. After I cuddled them something magical happened.... they smelled like dogs!

Maybe living with them will be OK! The dad is big and tall and he's not scared of anything! The mom said she's got something called puppy-love for me. I wonder if it tastes like a cookie or kibbles.

CHEDDAR CHEESE

My new parents came to visit me this evening. They were excited happy to meet me. They were nice to me and tried to cuddle me.
But I wasn't scared.  Well, maybe just a little bit!

I'm a baby and sometimes my baby brain takes over and I get quiet and shy and clingy. Emily calls me a velcro dog, 'cause I stick so close to her.
She smells like love and safety and dogs.

My new family doesn't smell like dogs. I'm so confused...

BOGEY (AKA CHEDDAR)

Hello World!  My name is Bogey (aka Cheddar)

I'm 14 weeks old and still unsure of what to expect and whats expected of me. Life has been quite an adventure so far and from what my fur-ends tell me,  it's only just begun.

I was born in the great white north and rescued by Yvette Labatte and her husband at Turtle Gardens. I was one of the lucky ones who avoided the killing roundups that take place in the northern communities and reservations.
TG found my fur-end Penny and I a foster mom on an island in the Pacific. I didn't know what an island was and Pacific is the milk that I love, so it must be a wonderful place. How exciting!

So off we went for a long ride in a van all the way down to Vancouver. Then I went on my first boat ride with my fearless grownup fur-end, Penny.

Penny is 4 and she knows lots of stuff about life, that I'm still to little to know about.  She's so smart and so pretty with her long flowing black hair and big brown eyes.  I'm never scared or worried when I hang out with her.

After the boat ride and we went Emily's house. Emily cuddled me and fed me and is helping me learn  how to be a regular dog. Emily is an awesome foster parent and has lots of fur friends at her house. There were all so nice to me and played with me and I wasn't scared at all!  Well, maybe just a little bit.

In the morning we all went to K9HQ Daycare, where Emily is the leader of an even bigger pack. I hit the jackpot when she took me in. Daycare is like going to a big organized party. We dance and we play and we get party treats and food, when we get tired we all crash and then party some more. Who ever wrote 'who let the dogs out' must have gone to K9HQ Daycare!

But everyone needs a furever home, including me... so my journey continued. You'll have to read more if you want to know what happens.. It's a dog gone good story....
